Sectoral Trends in Canada’s Greenhouse Gas Emissions 1990-1998, (2000)

Client: Environment Canada – Pollution Data Branch - Greenhouse Gas Division

SGA initiated what has become an annual evaluation for the GHG Division by providing a detailed analysis of sectoral trends in GHG emissions. Using reporting templates developed by SGA the GHG Division has continued to update the trends report in subsequent years for public reporting. The final report was used as a basis for the EC website reporting on Canadian trends http://www.ec.gc.ca/pdb/ghg/factsheets_e.cfm .

Using data compiled largely by the Greenhouse Gas Division of the Pollution Data Directorate, Environment Canada over the period 1990 to 1998, SGA identified the trends in Greenhouse Gas (GHG) emissions on a provincial and sectoral basis to provide an understanding of their nature, causes and their sources.

The seven sections in the final report analyze emission trends in terms of both large sources and important Canadian economic sectors. Following a national overview, six economic sectors are subject to analysis:

  • Energy Industries Production Sector;
  • Transportation Sector;
  • Manufacturing and Construction Sectors;
  • Residential and Commercial Sectors;
  • Agriculture Sector;
  • Other Sectors - Waste and Forestry / Land Use Change;

Where appropriate, a regional analysis was made identifying provincial trends in emission changes. The analysis included a view of the emerging patterns in emissions on a national, regional and sectoral basis and was targeted to assist in policy formulation at the provincial and federal ministerial level.

In 2001 SGA updated data and analysis for the energy production (fossil fuel and electricity) and the institutional, commercial, industry (ICI) sectors from 1990 to 1999.
