Identification of Key Sources for Canada’s Greenhouse Gas Inventory (2001)

Client: Environment Canada – Pollution Data Branch, Greenhouse Gas Division

This analysis identifies Key Source Categories for Canada’s Inventory of GHG emissions according to IPCC approaches. The IPCC manual on Good Practice Guidance and Uncertainty Management in National Greenhouse Gas Inventories identifies as good practice the identification of key source categories of emissions. The identification practice is intended to help inventory agencies prioritise their efforts and improve overall estimates. A key source category is:

…..one that is prioritised within the national inventory system because its estimate has a significant influence on a country’s total inventory of direct greenhouse gases in terms of the absolute level of emissions, the trend in emissions, or both. (IPCC)

SGA provided the analysis that identified Key Source Categories for Canada’s Inventory of GHG emissions according to IPCC approaches. The text and analysis of the SGA Final Report was incorporated in both the National Inventory Reports for 2001 and 2002.
