A Strategic Plan for the Fawn River Water Power Development (2006)

Clients: Two northern Ontario off-grid First Nation communities

SGA developed the strategic plan for two First Nation off-grid communities to take them through the risky pre-project stage of development up to construction of a hydro generating station on a nearby river. Initial assessment estimated the potential of the site as under 900 kW run-of-river plant. The communities are remote and served by diesel generators for electricity. The communities commissioned the report to provide guidance in assisting the project to move forward.

We assisted our clients by identifying 5 discrete issues:

The creation of a managing body within the community to oversee and provide initiative for the project. In this report we have identified this body as a Community Power Corporation or Cooperative (CPC);
Establish a market for generated power;
Manage the approvals process in a Provincial Park;
Obtain financing; and
Resolve technical details.

The resulting plan for site development took our clients through the risky pre-construction stages of the project.
